ABOUT MAMA COMES FIRST

Liberating Mothers - for a more Liberated World.

hi! I’m dawn, founder of mama comes first.

I had my fair share of issues growing up. Sexual wellbeing wasn’t one of them.

I was the unofficial 'sexpert’ at school, the go-to for everything from periods to pleasure. Somehow, I didn’t inherit the patriarchal gene of sexual shame and stigma, and had no qualms about exploring the wild and wonderful world of female sexuality.

My husband and I had our first of 4 children at 22 (while on birth control of course!), and I’ve since cared for thousands of mothers in a variety of roles - doula, midwife, childbirth educator, Psychiatric & Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, coach, etc.

Time and again, I’d meet moms who were struggling with their sex life, physically and emotionally. I’ve also met far too many moms who’ve given birth to multiple children, yet have NEVER HAD AN ORGASM, or satisfying sexual experience in their life.

In my efforts to support these mamas, I realized there’s an outrageous gap in sexual wellness resources for mothers.

There are plenty of mothering resources. There are plenty of sexual wellness resources. Yet it’s frustratingly sparse when it comes to the unique intersection of motherhood and sexuality.

I don’t think this is a coincidence. There’s long been a patriarchal split between mothering and sexuality. Keeping mothers disconnected from their bodies, their pleasure - and therefore their power - suits the capitalistic patriarchy just fine.

Mama Comes First was born from the desire to help mothers reclaim their bodies, pleasure and power, because we believe empowered mothers are a threat to all systems of oppression.

Our Justice-Led Values

Empowerment & Body Autonomy

We aim to dismantle patriarchal myths about motherhood and sexuality, advocating for body autonomy and empowered choices around our bodies, sexuality and reproductive health.

Inclusivity & Intersectionality

We challenge the patrarchal one-size-fits-all narratives, recognizing how race, sexuality, gender identity, and socio-economic status shape our diverse experience of motherhood.

Community & Collective Care

Through solidarity and community, we counter the isolation and individualization perpetuated by patriarchal structures, pooling our collective power to create more justice & freedom for all.

Transparency
& Integrity

We commit to transparency and integrity, challenging the opaqueness and profit-driven motives often seen in industries impacting women's health and sexuality.

Sustainability & Responsibility

We pledge to sustainability and ethical responsibility, opposing the exploitative practices and unsustainable consumption patterns upheld by capitalism.

Innovation for Equality

We challenge the objectification and marginalization of women, and commit to innovation that not only meets mothers’ needs, but advances our expression in the world.
