Wild sex drive during Pregnancy? Here’s why…

Pregnancy is a transformative period filled with seemingly endless  physical, emotional, and psychological changes. One aspect that can vary significantly among pregnant people  is their sex drive. For some, pregnancy can lead to a WILD  increase in sexual desire. Let’s discuss some of the reasons behind this surge in libido.

Hormonal Changes

Estrogen and Progesterone

The big drivers of increased sex drive during pregnancy are the hormones estrogen and progesterone. During pregnancy, levels of these hormones soar, especially in the second trimester, which is when many pregnant people start to notice their sex drive increase. Estrogen increases blood flow to the pelvic region, which can heighten sensitivity and arousal. Progesterone, although primarily known for maintaining pregnancy, can also contribute to increased libido by enhancing relaxation and reducing anxiety, making sexual activity more appealing.

Physical Changes

Increased Blood Flow & Enhanced Sensitivity

Increased blood flow to the pelvic area, breasts, and genitals can make these regions more sensitive. This increased sensitivity can lead to increased arousal and sexual desire. Many pregnant people report that their breasts become more sensitive and their genitals more responsive to touch, which can enhance sexual pleasure. The increased blood flow to the pelvic area (including your vagina and vulva) can increase arousal and even make orgasms both easier to reach and more intense. This can create a positive feedback loop where enjoyable sexual experiences lead to a greater desire for sexual activity. Some studies even show nearly 50% of pregnant people report they experience an improvement in orgasm in pregnancy!

Changes in Body Image

For some, the physical changes that come with pregnancy can boost body image and self-esteem. The changes in breast size, the fullness of the body, and the “glow” that many associate with pregnancy can make some pregnant people feel more attractive and desirable, leading to an increased interest in sex.

Emotional Factors

Bonding with Partner

The emotional closeness and bonding that can occur during pregnancy can also play a role in increasing sex drive. Many couples feel closer and more connected as they prepare for the arrival of their baby, which can translate into increased sexual desire.

Reduced Anxiety About Conception

For some couples, the anxiety about making a baby can negatively impact sex drive. Once pregnant, the relief of not having to focus on conception can allow for more relaxed and enjoyable sexual experiences, leading to an increased libido.

Feeling Empowered

Pregnancy can be an empowering experience for many pregnant people. The sense of creating life and the changes in their bodies can make them feel powerful and confident, which can enhance sexual desire.

Psychological Changes

Pregnancy Glow

The “pregnancy glow” is often attributed to increased blood circulation and hormonal changes, which can improve mood and energy levels. Feeling happier and more energetic can naturally lead to a higher sex drive.

Reduction in Negative Symptoms

While early pregnancy can bring symptoms like nausea and fatigue, many people  find that these subside during the second trimester. The relief from these symptoms can result in feeling more energetic and interested in sexual activity.

Variability in Experience

It’s important to note that experiences with sex drive during pregnancy can vary widely. While some women may experience a significant increase in libido, others may find their sex drive decreases due to discomfort, nausea, fatigue, or other factors. Each pregnancy is unique, and changes in sexual desire are a normal part of the journey.

For those experiencing these changes, open communication with partners and healthcare providers can ensure a healthy and satisfying sexual experience during pregnancy. Each individual's experience is unique, and respecting and responding to these changes is key to maintaining intimacy and connection during this transformative time.
